“What will happen if I use 3 ohm speakers with this receiver? I already tried connecting them and so far they sound good. Except the un-powered subwoofer which had no sound. I made sure to set the receiver's internal impedance to 4 ohms.”

Just make sure there is no extra heat coming from the receiver. If there is, bite the big one and get new speakers. And yes, the sub must have it's own amp and electric power.
