7.2 allows for 3 more speakers than the ‘usual’ 5.1 setup you describe... 5.1 translates to 5 channels plus 1 sub - 5.1. So a 7.2 system can accommodate 2 extra surround speakers (sides) plus the option of L and R subs. It’s a bit overkill, but there’s always got to be a next best thing, and if you have a true home theater, L/R subs and side surrounds can provide a more surrounding experience.
