“I have scanned over 1000 pictures with no issues. Recently the scanner is scanning the pictures with a black space surrounding the picture. I recalibrated the scanner and that did not help. What is causing the scanner to do this?”

Make sure you clean the sensor area and the black strip opposite the sensor and then recalibrate. You must clean and recalibrate the scanner. By the way, you can visit the Plustek website and click on the Chat window in the lower right corner and chat with our technicians Monday - Friday.
