“Can I install 8GB (1 stick) in my Gateway Nv57H77u? Since one of the memory ports no longer recognizes one of the 2x4 GB installed. I only get 4 GB recognized on my Gateway Laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium system. So I wondered if I installed just 1X8 GB in the working memory slot if that would work so that I could have the 8GB that my system will allow.”

You need to match them for the slots. No mixing and matching. Mine has a max of 4 gigs

If u still have the instructions or the sticker that came on it saying what and how much it can handle. Divide that by 2 and you have your answer. But did you try and turn them around put the one you know that works in the bad side it could be the ram stick they do go bad . And make sure u take and get it all the way down till the pins snap shut to be sure that the only way without taking it in to tell yourself.
