Under the right conditions, such as a lighting strike, yes it can blow up, however the result is a moderate 'pop' and a tiny bit of smoke (smells like burning plastic) Some of the capacitors on the MB can make a much louder bang. Make sure the voltages on the 6 pin connector are correct or else you will get the same result, 'pop'.
