I've had the same problem with the all black 2.0 PNY thumb drives. Three of the five would not engage my Dell laptop usbA port. Yes, the cover can be removed. I used a knife and a small ChanneLock pliers. But this is dangerous to one's hands and fingers. If you have a hobbyist friend with a Dremel tool, I should think you could cut the sides of the sliding cover and remove it. Fingernail polish remover applied with a cotton Q-tip along the sides of the sliding cover might soften it enough to remove. Again, this is risky. But that extra 1-2mm of engagment makes all the difference.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The cover slides back to use. Slide forward to protect the connector.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The covers slide back exposing the USB-A plug that will fit a similar port. Most new computers, however, do not have a USB-A port, but there are many adapters available. I noticed that older machines (like the copy machine available to me) do not accept this drive, as it's a USB-A 3.0 (faster than a 2.0), but the machine only accepts 2.0. That will change as equipment is upgraded.
