• A:Answer I've had the same problem with the all black 2.0 PNY thumb drives. Three of the five would not engage my Dell laptop usbA port. Yes, the cover can be removed. I used a knife and a small ChanneLock pliers. But this is dangerous to one's hands and fingers. If you have a hobbyist friend with a Dremel tool, I should think you could cut the sides of the sliding cover and remove it. Fingernail polish remover applied with a cotton Q-tip along the sides of the sliding cover might soften it enough to remove. Again, this is risky. But that extra 1-2mm of engagment makes all the difference.
