No, you do not have to swing your arm for the tracker to register your steps.

Please try again later.in MY experience, it does NOT count steps while I am pushing a shopping cart, so I push with my right hand (Fitbit is on the left) or I pull the cart behind me. It's a little awkward ,but it works. As to swinging my arm......I am not sure. sometimes if my hand is in my pocket, it counts the step and sometimes it doesn't. So.......I try to swing.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.If you hang onto something with the arm that you are wearing the Fitbit on, it will not count your steps. I found this out while using my treadmill and hanging on to balance myself. The same thing happens with a shopping cart. What I do is use my other arm to hang onto the treadmill while letting the Fitbit arm swing naturally. You can also push the shopping cart with one arm if you can steer it. If you have your spouse or somebody with you, you can use it as an excuse to get out of pushing the cart all the time.
