Self powered means the Monitor XT10 has it's own amplifier built-in (allowing the user to connect this sub-woofer directly to their sub-woofer output port of their AV receiver or integrated amplifier). Class D amplification is the most efficient type of amplifier used in powered sub-woofers. It offers high power without adding so much to your fuel bill.
