I highly advise to not attach directly to phone, the adhesive is very strong. 

If you attached to back of phone case, you can remove case to continue using mount. 

Fully collapsed sticks out about 1/4" from surface mounted to.

If you get the pop socket car mount it works perfectly. If you have a different type of mount you may have to force it a bit since it as to the thickness of the phone.
