• Three reasons. Most obvious is for the sake of storage and travel, cause wires are easier to roll up when they’re not attached to the controller themselves. Secondly, it’s designed to protect the switch in the case of a hard tug or someone tripping on the cable, which will cause the cable to unplug from the controller instead of yanking on the dock and dropping the switch. And finally, because the type of cable it uses is so common, it makes it really easy to replace if it gets damaged somehow.

• The cord isn’t that long. So you might want to replace the existing cord with a longer one.. that is why you are able to unplug the cord.
