This turntable has no preamp nor amp in it. Pro-Ject does make a model, called The Jukebox, that has a built in amplifier. With it, you can not only play vinyl, but it also has bluetooth in, so you can stream from your phone or computer (think iTunes, Spotify etc) and it sports an additional analog input too (think for gaming system or TV sound. This turntable requires powered speakers, it does not have it's own amp.
You definitely need a preamp if you do not have an amp with a phono connection. However, if you do have a phono connection then you should be fine. I have mine connected to a Sonos connect but had to purchase a preamp because the sound was really low.
