It really does a good job of both because of the incline going from 0-20. I like to keep the incline between 10-20 because I prefer more of the up/down motion, but if you prefer forward/back you can get this motion well in the 0-9 incline range. Although I usually do a interval training program on it which varies it automatically for me through the various inclines and intensities.
