The grill you see sets on the bottom as a spacer for the wood from the bottom of the bowl. There are tabs at the top to hold a grilling surface you can find at any box store for a few dollars.

The grill is to hold the fire wood you are going to burn. You could use skewers to roast marshmallows or hotdogs over the fire though.

The grate you see is to hold the wood for the fire. It is not designed to grill food and the instructions warn against doing so.

Yes you can if you purchase a grilling insert separately. Can be found cheaply at an box store. Pit has tabs to hold the grilling surface.
