• Both work equally well but if your tap water has a high degree of mineralization (calcium/iron) it will coat things in its vicinity with a very fine dust. This is true of all of these ultrasonic units...

• You can use both but directions say to use distilled. It will keep buildup of calcium and lime out of machine.
