A standard basic rear view mirror has one function. The camera may or may not stay on all the time, but the "picture" in your rear view mirror only appears when your car is put in reverse. There are more complex backup cameras that have front and rear facing cameras that stay on all the time and have an SD card to record what happens over time as for legal reasons like being in a collision, etc.
