It can be, and is recommended to be, initially charged with a USB, but mine came with a solar charger that seems to be doing the job of maintaining charge without having to be "plugged in". I have had mine for a month now in March...in Texas...and under the eave of my home. Don't think heat or rain will be an issue, and they haven't yet had any impact on my camera. Spider webs are another story. Because of placement, I have given them yet ANOTHER attachment point. Simple wipe of the hand when needed clears the problem.
