Yes it can be use as a backup camera. You don’t have to put a sd card in the camera if you don’t want too. I have it in both if my vehicles. Love it

Did not hook back up function(splice into brake lights, Grid lines) use rear camera when driving - works better than my old rear view. I flip/flop to front camera, sometimes. Records both front and rear by default.
