The hardwire goes through your fuse box. there's one terminal for constant power, and one terminal for ignition power. From my understanding, the camera will go into a sort of sleep mode when the car is turned off. There, it will be paying attention to any motion in the car and start recording if it detects a collision. This is always going to trickle your battery down, but It shouldn't kill your battery in a week.
