When you installed the dash cam is records and continues and you can see the screen is working but once you open your door to get out it stops recording.

Yes it stays on. You can set it up how you want. You can also have the front view on or the rear view on or both. It is a great system.

I have it mounted on the side of the mirror so I can't see it but my passengers just tell me that it's on all the time.
