Hello Jon, Out of the box, your Ring devices come with standard features which do not require a subscription. This Ring Alarm Smoke & CO Listener does, however, require a Ring Alarm system to be installed on your property in order to function. This is because the Alarm Smoke & CO Listener is an accessory to the Ring Alarm system, not the system itself. We do offer an optional subscription service known as Ring Protect.
