It listens a few inches away from your existing/ separate CO/smoke detectors and reports on that detector. It does not detect the CO and smoke, rather relies on another device you have to report it. There are 3rd party ones I think Best Buy sells that are detectors that work with ring and detect co/ smoke if that is what you want. I trust this one as I put a listener in my basement and up by bedrooms with my detectors that are hardwired and battery backup and they seem to work fine.
