Great question. No, a subscription is not required for the Ring Battery Doorbell Plus. The Ring Protect Plan is a subscription that gives you access to paid features for Ring devices. With a Ring Protect Plan, you can save, review, and share video recordings from your Ring devices to your Ring account.

Without a Ring Protect Plan, you can still view real-time video for Ring doorbells and cameras and answer doorbell notifications when they happen, but you don’t get video recordings of those events.

You can operate without a subscription very easily. However,  some other extra features will prompt you for a subscription. The product works great without a subscription.

You don’t need a subscription for it. I think the one you’re thinking of is the subscription to get 24/7 monitoring by some security agent but it’s not required

I believe you can operate without subscription. However, without the subscription you will not have the abilities to save/record the ring activities in the cloud. With that being said, you probably wouldn't be able to go back and look at an event if needed.
