Mine is set to go off with motion; however, it will periodically (there are several time increment options) monitor area as well.

Thank you for your question today! The Ring Spotlight Cam Plus triggers notifications when motion is detected. With a Ring Home Plan, when motion is detected the Ring Spotlight Cam Plus will also record and save that recording to the Ring app to be view at your time.
