You can run it with just wifi and battery, if you never plan on hard wiring it in, I would pick up a second battery so that you can charge it up when this one notifies you its down to pretty low %. This way you can swap it out in 30 seconds flat with no real downtime as opposed to taking the battery out, having a few hours of down time and having to slap it back in when charged.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. It can be used with the battery, as long as you charge it from time to time. It does have a better video, and gives you a "preview" of what happened prior to the actual high pixel recording.

Please try again later.Hello Cherri, The Ring Video Doorbell 4 is Ring’s newest battery video doorbell with features including all-new color Pre-Roll technology, 1080p HD video, two-way talk, Advance Motion Detection, enhanced dual-band wifi and Quick Replies. With color Pre-Roll, users can see even more of what’s happening outside their front door. With an additional 4-second color video preview of each motion event, the doorbell will automatically start recording before users even receive an alert. The main difference between Ring Video Doorbell 3 and Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus and Ring Video Doorbell 4, is that Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus and Ring Video Doorbell 4 have a pre-roll feature, which allows you to see up to 4 additional seconds of video before a motion event is triggered – a first-to-market feature for battery-powered doorbells and unique exclusively to Ring. The main differences between the Ring Video Doorbell 3 Plus and Ring Video Doorbell 4 is that the pre-roll video previews on Video Doorbell 4 are in color, have a higher quality video, and improved nigh time functionality.
