No, you don't need a doorbell connection. But you will need to use it wirelessly, which means charging the battery. I recommend buying a second battery for convenient, consistent operation. With the ring app, it will let you know when the battery is low so you can charge the second battery to take the place of the powering down battery

We had to go with this option because our existing doorbell did not have enough power to run the Ring 4. We got the chime to put inside which helps the doorbell chime inside the house too.

Existing doorbell wiring is not required. However the doorbell can be hardwired to an existing doorbell system or transformer for continuous charging (8-24 VAC, 40VA max, 50/60Hz).
