Great questions, technodummy. No, the Ring Video Doorbell 2nd Generation does not need to be wired for it to work. Yes, you can power the device with the USB cable. However, if the power goes out, since it is a battery device, it will function off of battery power solely at that time. A charge will typically last between 6 and 12 months. However, real battery life is dependent on a number of factors in your home's environment, such as local weather, number of events captured, and frequency of activation.
