you are able to view in real time, so in a way it is like a "peep hole" except you can view it in real time on your phone wherever you are. You can also speak through the ring and talk to/hear whoever is on your porch via the app on your phone. It also records and saves your activity for future review if you buy the $30/year Ring plan. Otherwise your videos won't be saved/stored. I'm really happy with my purchase, I'm able to see when groceries/packages are delivered or if there is a person/animal on my porch, etc. The alerts are in real time so I know right away what is going on. For $30 a year I like that the videos are saved in case something ever happened where I needed to access them as well.

No, this mounts on the outside wall near the door and functions as a doorbell and a camera. The camera detects motion nearby, sends an alert and automatically starts recording.
