No, it does not need batteries. Wired means it is powered by a wire, like all old doorbells used to be. It does require a transformer to step down the power because it does not operate on 120 volts. Your old transformer may work if you are replacing an older wired doorbell but I would check that the voltage is correct for this doorbell.
