This item plugs into one of existing outlets only.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.There is only one plug on the back (see pic) of the unit so I assume the answer is "within the unit". The lower part of the surge's plug is just a plastic peg and so I assume that it will not actually be powered by your lower plug at all. So, in essence, if you use this surge in your "switched" outlet, you will lose your switching capability on the lower.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Both sides are connected to access the top outlet. The lower outlet is not connected into and just a standoff for spacing at the lower outlet is in place. Unit only has one plug into the wall outlet.
