“I secured the mount to the studs but after attaching the tv it does not stay upright. No matter how tight I make the large wing nut the tv weight slides down the arc. How do I keep the tv from tipping downward?”

You are tightening the wrong screw. Read directions to tighten the "swivel mount"....there is no wing nut involved.
