Yes, once you plug in the ear buds while using the Roku, the sounds from the tv is routed through the remote, only you, or another if you're sharing the buds, can hear. It's made so you can watch shows without disturbing other people, say a sleeping spouse.

My system had to reload the movie (kept it in the same spot) if I tried to go back to tv speakers in the middle of the movie. This may just be a user issue since I didn't read any manual on its use. Also, the volume controls are on the side of the remote and work well.
