(MY ANSWER) Think of it like an operating system for you tv, Android phones have the , iPhones have the etc. Roku players have competition, it’s not the only one of its kind. There is also the amazon fire stick, Apple TV and maybe more that I don’t know of. You would buy a Roku stick, player or even the tv then you’d need WiFi connection after this you’d connect the stick or player (assuming you wouldn’t buy the tv) to your tv and instantly have access to over 50,000 apps from movie channels to music, rain tv, radio and much more. You can search for and add free channels to watch shows, movies, listen to music, sports, weather, cooking etc, some of which will be free while others require a subscription or a one time fee purchase. If you don’t have cable or your looking to ditch cable, this is the next best thing. Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The Roku is a streaming device. Streaming content means you don't have wait for a download to watch shows or movies. Once you connect it to the internet, and set up your Roku account, you can stream TV. Some channels are free, so there's unlimited access to sports, shows, news etc. Channel availability can vary by area or country. Also, some content is subscription based, like Netflix or cable channels like Showtime and HBO.

And last, you'll need a Roku. The Roku is a tool that allows you to download media 'apps' to your tv, essentially turning your 'old tv' into a 'smart tv'. Not all apps are free. Some apps are tv apps and some are movie apps, some are both (you'll learn more once you've connected and installed the device). Installation is basically just plugging it in. Follow the prompts on your tv screen with the Roku remote. If you like variety or just need a change in what your cable's schedule provides, it's an excellent device to have. Out of the hundreds of channels I get from Spectrum, most are double and triple channels and the other 80% I don't even use. I'm slowly using more streaming options (Netflix=pd subscription, Amazon [pd sub], Hulu [pd], YouTube [free]), as I'm bored with local cable and weary of cutting it for good too. You probably cant really do that without a decent alternative tv tool and a Roku device is definitely a cheap way to solve that problem. Hope this helped.
