“I have Cox cable and I am unhappy with their customer service. I only watch about 10 of the 100+ channels. I would like to get the cable shows (HGTV, Motortrend) and several other cable channels but I don't want a bundled offering for $50 or more.”

Look into a streaming service like Philo or Sling. Philo is around $20 a month for 50+ channels (one of them being HDTV). I could not find Motortrend in either though. There is also Hulu TV ($45), YouTubeTV ($65), and some others but those are already in your no-go price range. Then there is Pluto TV... absolutely free. It has a ton of lesser known channels, but there might be something in there that might substitute for HDTV and Motortrend. AS I said it is free so you wont lose anything by trying it.
