The microwave comes complete with a charcoal filter, so, no, you do not have to get an additional kit. FYI - GE microwaves do not come with this filter, and it's quite costly to order it. That was final determining factor which made me choose the Samsung over GE.

The SMH1816S comes packaged with the charcoal filter that helps to filter odors from the air that is recirculated into the room. Replacement filters are available through 800-SAMSUNG.
