Possibly both. A charcoal filter goes in the ventilation area in the top of the microwave, and it is supposed to be replaced intermittently through the front, after opening the door.The underside of it has a filter in the fan intake, but I'm not sure if is just a standard filter or specifically meant for grease. I've attached a picture of the underside. I did not take a picture of the charcoal filter in the top because I have to unscrew a front cover piece.
