The ice storage container can be. The unit itself hangs from the top and there is an "Ice off" button you select to stop making ice.

Please try again later.If you'd like to use the space in the upper freezer drawer that's dedicated to the ice container for additional storage, simply turn the icemaker off on the control panel. Samsung does not recommend actually removing the icemaker which is factory installed and doing so could impact the warranty. Since the icemaker suspends from the ceiling of the freezer, it doesn't take up very much storage room. Thanks for the question, Ms. Samsung
