Optical connection worked well for us with great sound and no problems

Unless your TV is labeled for ARC, hdmi is not an option. The difference between optical and hdmi is not noticeable to the average consumer. While ARC is better for high level equipment, I have ARC connected on my high end tv with optical on the decent tv. I swear the cheap sound bar connected via optical cable sounds better than the hdmi connection on the higher end tv and sound bar.

Optical is better, invest on a high quality optical cable.

The optical digital connection will provide the same, maximum quality audio but doesn't carry the video feed.

use optical that's best for sound. I have sony Bravia X800E 55inch tested with HDMI but tried with Optical, I moved to optical and sound is amazing on optical.
