Yes they can be and are set to that functionality by default. You can change the settings for what you use either side for whenever you want

The bottom compartments can be utilized as a freezer. In addition, the bottom right compartment is called the FlexZone compartment. FlexZone has 5 functions that you can choose from. I have listed them below and their temperature and intended use. Freeze: Select Freeze to set the Flex Zone to the same temperature as the freezer. Use to keep frozen food fresh. Soft Freeze: e Select Soft Freeze to set the Flex Zone to 23℉. Use to keep meat and fish fresh for an extended time Meat/Fish: Select Meat/Fish to set the Flex Zone to 30℉. Use when storing deli food such as steak, cold cuts, fish, bacon, and cheese. Fruit/Veggies: Select Fruit/Veggies to set the Flex Zone to 36℉. Beverage: Select Beverage to set the Flex Zone to 40℉.
