“Does the filter cartridge filter water for the dispenser and ice maker or just the dispenser?”

The water line connects to both the water dispenser and the ice maker; however, the filter cartridge is only on the water dispenser part. I have included the user manual link for the refrigerator. Please click on the link and turn to page 11 for more information regarding the filter cartridge.
