“Rep told me I couldn't use my current 1/4" plastic hose line (that is connected to my Fridgidaire) to hook it up myself.I had to supposedly buy their kit even if I wanted to hook it up myself.Is this accurate?Why would their be need for a special hookup?”

Some local regulations may require new connection hoses with the purchase of a new appliance. Replacing your hoses every few years would be a good maintenance practice anyway :).
