Displayport is just another form of Audio/video connection like HDMI, but usually has higher support. But HDMI isn't too far behind on the Specs for future support. Another reason to use Displayport is for the Freesync support on an Nvidia GPU, as the Nvidia Freesync support only works with Displayport.

Like VGA, DVI, HDMI, Thunderbolt, etc. If your system supports DisplayPort and your screen supports DisplayPort, you can use it. If you are a gamer and are running super high resolutions at super high refresh rates, DisplayPort may have some advantages over the more home-electronics-friendly HDMI. For most use cases, it's a wash.
