“The subwoofer has an odd film over the rear "hole" or whatever it is (about 6" in diameter) after unpacking it. It almost appears to be glued over this, but it is not cut to be circular and reminds of something that should be removed. Any clue?”

I would remove it because I removed mine. Once you the sub is on, the hole creates a resonance that blows air outside and helps create deeper sound. If you leave the film on, all you might hear is the film rumbling.

I "believe" mine is rattling that taut plastic. I just installed it and will need to run tests. I'm going to leave the plastic on and if its is rattling, then I'll tape gorilla tape on it.
