“I've got the bar to sound pretty loud with just hdmi and it made a difference but now I'm getting some sort of sound lag as if people are speaking with their mouths first and about a second later the sound comes out. Is there a way to sync the sound?”

If the video and audio between the TV and your Soundbar are not synchronized, select AUDIO SYNC in Sound Settings, and then set audio delay between 0-300 milliseconds by using the up/down buttons (Except "USB" mode). Audio Sync is only supported in some functions. Page 17 in the User Manual If that doesn't work with HDMI, why not use the digital audio out cable provided in the parts. I set mine up with digital audio, set the synchronization and it works perfectly even with the surround rear speakers. Good Luck
