“Bought 58" Samsung TV & want to add 3.1 soundbar. Can connect with either HDMI cable or optical audio cable. Prefer to use optical audio cable, so I can reserve the HDMI cables for an xBox, DVR, DVD, other stuff. Any diff btw optical and HDMI connections?”

Unlike HDMI, TOSLINK (optical cable) does not have the bandwidth to carry the lossless versions of Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, or more than two channels of PCM audio.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.The HDMI connection is an HDMI ARC connection - one advantage is it will turn on and off with the TV when set up. Optical may stay on when not in use.
