The black SS edge is an integral part of the cook-top structure and supports the units weight on the counter top surface. The glass top appears to float in the trim, sealed with with looks like an RTV caulking. The unit sits about 3/8" proud of the counter top surface. It sits higher than some competitive units, but looks very good as the edge is tapered in front, and is very thin in profile on the other three sides.
