A heat shield is unnecessary. There's a drawer directly beneath my cooktop and I've never had a problem with heat. The bottom part of the cooktop assembly does not get hot.

This cooktop model is not equipped with a heat shield. Please make sure the wall coverings, countertop, and cabinets around the cooktop can withstand heat (up to 194 °F) generated by the cooktop.
