I'm not quite understanding the question. Do you mean for watching Over the Air broadcast television? If so, then there is no need for a converter. The FCC and federal government mandated that all licensed TV channels broadcast in digital format several years ago, The converter boxes were used for converting that digital signal to the old analog type TVs (think the big heavy CRT type TVs). If you're talking about cable TV, then, yes, you would need the converter from your cable television company. There used to be a cable card standard. But, I think that fell by the way side.
