• Great question! The lid will need to be closed and locked while the washer is filling with water. However, at certain points in the wash cycle, a shirt with a + sign icon will appear on the display panel. When this is lit up, it indicates that, at that time, you can pause the cycle and open the door. Generally this is used to add or remove items. ^Jecca
