Chris, you're right, you would need to add the rear speakers to achieve true 5.1. Hopefully my review will be posted by Best Buy shortly, which will explain it a bit further in detail. The ports on the top allow sound to bounce off side walls to achieve a "pseudo" rear speaker sound source, but it's not nearly as good as actual rear speakers would be. However it is compatible with Samsung's rear speaker set.
